Why Every Medicare Participant Should Use the Medicare.gov Portal

Many people enroll in Medicare and never realize they have access to a powerful online tool that can help them save money, avoid mistakes, and stay in control of their healthcare.

When you’re all signed up for Medicare, you’re done, right? Well, not exactly. The Medicare.gov portal isn’t just for enrollment. It’s your official hub for quickly checking coverage, comparing plans, reviewing claims, and making informed decisions year after year.

At Advanced Benefit Solutions, we encourage every Medicare participant to create and actively use their Medicare.gov account even if you work with an advisor, like us. Here’s why it matters, and exactly how to set up your Medicare.gov account.

Why Use the Medicare.gov Portal

Medicare plans, costs, and benefits change regularly. Relying on old paperwork or memory can lead to missed opportunities or costly surprises.

Your Medicare.gov account allows you to:

  • Verify your current Medicare coverage
  • Review claims and costs in one place
  • Compare drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans
  • Check whether prescriptions are covered
  • Avoid enrollment mistakes and penalties
  • Prepare for Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) with confidence

Think of it as your single source of truth for Medicare. You don’t have to call anyone or wait on hold for hours! Your Medicare.gov account puts you in control, and allows you to keep up with your healthcare claims.

Step 1: Create Your Medicare.gov Account

This is important: even if you already have Medicare, you must create an online account to access your personal information.

What you’ll need:

  • Your Medicare Number (from your red, white, and blue Medicare card)
  • Your date of birth
  • Your ZIP code
  • An email address
  • A secure password

How to do it:

  1. Go to Medicare.gov
  2. Click “Log in/Create Account”
  3. Select “Create Account”
  4. Follow the prompts to verify your identity

It’s important to verify your identity to protect your account from fraud. Many times you can use the same credentials you use for other sites like Social Security.

Tip: Use an email address you check regularly because Medicare will send important notifications there.

Step 2: Review Your Medicare Coverage

Once logged in, your dashboard will show:

  • Whether you have Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or both
  • Your Part A and Part B status
  • Any prescription drug coverage (Part D)

This is the best way to confirm that your coverage matches what you think you have.

Step 3: Check Your Claims and Costs

The portal allows you to see:

  • Recent doctor visits
  • Hospital stays
  • Medical claims
  • What Medicare paid vs. what you may owe

Why this matters:

  • You can spot billing errors early (If your claim doesn’t match your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
  • You can understand your out-of-pocket costs
  • You’re not caught off guard by unexpected bills

Even if you receive statements in the mail, the online portal is often faster and more detailed.

Step 4: Review Your Prescription Drug Coverage

This is one of the most important yet overlooked features of the portal.

Through Medicare.gov, you can:

  • Enter your medications
  • Check if they’re still covered
  • See if they’re in a higher cost tier
  • Compare plans that may save you money

It may surprise you to learn that drug formularies change every year. A plan that worked last year may cost significantly more this year. That’s why it is important to use the “Find Plans Now” tool to review your medications and find the best fit.

Step 5: Compare Plans During Annual Enrollment

Each fall (October 15 – December 7), Medicare participants can make changes for the following year.

Using the Medicare.gov Plan Finder allows you to:

  • Compare Medicare Advantage plans
  • Compare Part D drug plans
  • See estimated annual costs
  • Filter by doctors, pharmacies, and prescriptions

This tool is essential for making apples-to-apples comparisons and avoiding plans that look good on paper but don’t fit your needs.

Step 6: Use Medicare.gov Together With an Advisor

Using the Medicare.gov portal does not replace working with a trusted Medicare professional! While this tool is helpful for looking at plan options, comparing costs, and viewing claims, working with a trusted advisor can help align these options to your specific health and budget needs.

At Advanced Benefit Solutions, we use the same tools Medicare provides to:

  • Double-check plan details
  • Validate costs and coverage
  • Walk you through changes clearly
  • Help you avoid costly mistakes

When you understand what you’re seeing in your Medicare.gov account, our conversations become more productive, and your decisions become more confident.
